"Although life is hyper-individualised, you rarely go about it alone. This rings especially for RADIOHOP, the 4-man band drawing in everything that derives from Jazz. Aptly titled, ‘All We Do’ sees the band culminating each member’s journey through life as a performer and music head, into one entity. It is a collection of various musical feelings; drawn from all of the widely diverse musical environments they are surrounded by. Their early explorations in Hip-Hop laid the foundation RADIOHOP jetted from. All We Do ventures into Soul, Funk, Jazz, Broken Beat, Brazilian harmony, Fusion and other genres that they see connections with. It engenders a journey through the peaks and troughs of a modern musical spectrum and is an undeniable act of successfully approaching a contemporary Jazz album.
Together, they drew on Jazz as a concept existing outside the walls of formality. In addition to sessions and gigs with like-minded musicians, they explored the Amsterdam nightlife and genre-bending concerts for inspiration. This 3.5-year exploration brought them unconventional writing, producing and performing experiences resulting in All We Do being as much a presentation of the people accompanying them on this exploration, as it is about the journey itself.
RADIOHOP are constantly surrounded by other musicians and creatives from all different genres, disciplines and spaces. The album is a celebration of the creative, and the ecosystem they operate in. The band likes to root that in the philosophy of Hip-Hop: spoken word, rap, vocals, lyrics, flute solos, photography, digital art, graphic design, tagging and poetry all congregate on the limited vinyl, as they truly believe art should not see any material boundaries. All We Do appreciates the art and the artist's creative endeavour. RADIOHOP gladly shares that with others in a holistic creation that is this album.
Collaborations
Bringing together a multitude of collaborations and a wide variety of art mediums, ‘All We Do’ shows the product of creative possibilities when releasing musical work. The album features guest performances by Amsterdam-based poet Sydney Lowell on ‘Fall’ (6), whose words and intention the quartet immediately admired from their live collaboration last summer.
Vocals by London-based artist Raelle and rap verses by Ill Camille from Los Angeles appear as a feature on ‘Stop Playin’’ (5) after the band’s keyboardist met them at a writing camp in the South of France. Both artists instantly were enticed by the fresh and eccentric vibe of the song, stirring their creativity.
‘Tribute’ (10) is a stand-out closing track with London-born artist Finn Peters on flute. Peters played in the band of Kaidi Tatham, one of the leading figures of ‘Bugz in the Attic’, who were in their turn the driving force behind the Broken Beat scene in West London. Whether on headphones, studio monitors, in the clubs or rehearsal studio, RADIOHOP dissected every song from Kaidi Tatham they could get their hands on. They wove melodies, progressions and rhythms back into their live shows, and ‘Tribute’ is a concluding composition celebrating influential souls like Kaidi and Brazilian composer César Camargo.
The band has collaborated visually with Amsterdam-based street artist & poet Laser 3.14 providing powerful visual poetry with a tag on the inner sleeve, Utrecht photographer Megan Jane Simons’ bold statement capturing us in the vast, spacious world created by Brussels-based digital artist Valentin Pavageau. To unify and display all of the unique art, RADIOHOP’s drummer Euan Jenkins designed the cover to tie a ribbon on this holistic project from start to finish, from music to artwork.
Finally, Noam ‘Soul Supreme’ Ofir provided the mix for the album. A successful producer with his own work of originals and covers of beloved Hip-Hop tracks, allowed him to understand the direction and choices the band took with ease, giving each track character and clarity for the jounrey to be conveyed to the listener." - Mo Wrights
